Grief in the ER by Kellie Johnson Contest Judge Andrea Selch, poet and president of Carolina Wren Press noted: "Reading this group of poems, I was struck by the way illness, too, makes strange bedfellows: In the hospital, the mundane and the magical overap, prayer and superstitions mingle, cookies and milk and heart catheters alike provide comfort. ........................................................................... .Of the three poems that took first second and third places in this contest, I appreciated most of all their attention to physical detail, to the concretes: the cancer surgeon's long fingers, the baskets that hold flowers or bouquets of dirt and stones, the "migration fluttering" of Cedar Waxings, and even the cardiologist's turn of the phrase - referring to the procedure as 'plumbing'."
